Untersturmfuhrer Werner

Full Name: Karl Johan Werner

Born: 21st May 1921, Landshut, Bavaria

Civilian Occupation: Farmer

Awards: Infantry assault badge, Panzer destruction badge

UstF Werner is the platoon commander. The son of a farmer, Werner grew up understanding machinery and the country way of life. A quiet yet concientious officer, Werner enjoys reading and playing cards with his comrades. UstF Werner began his waffen-ss career when he volounteered at the outbreak of war in 1939. After being passed as suitable for the waffen-ss, he passed out into the SS-Totenkopfdivision and trained with that unit for the invasion of France in May 1940. Werner began his career in the infantry, but his knowledge of vehicles did not go un-noticed, and he was soon posted to the Armoured car platoon of the Aufklarungs abteilung.

After serving with distinction in France in battles against French and British troops, Werner joined his comrades in the occupation duties and training that took place between the fall of France and the launch of operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union. By Now, Werner had been selected for officer training. He had also been awarded the infanty assault badge.

During the Demjansk encirclement, Werner was awarded the EKII for defending a strongpoint against Red Army infantry using only an MP40 and some petrol bombs. In the summer of 1943, Werner was awarded the Panzer destruction badge for single-handed destruction of a T-34 with a sack of greneades. In doing so, he prevented the Soviet Tank from annihilating a machine-gun nest.

Although a professional and dutiful soldier, Werner nevertheless longs for an end to the war, so he can return home to the family farm and raise a family of his own.

Born: 27th May 1911, Munchen

Awards: EK1, EK2, Wound badge in Black, Infantry Assault, Close combat clasp in silver

Born to a middle class family, Clause joined the Hitler Youth and then after which joined the SS, in 1934, where he was posted to the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler.

Clause then in Oct 1939 transferred to the SS-Totenkopf and saw heaving fighting in the invasion of France.

After the French campaign Clause then prepared for the invasion of Russia, and again saw heavy fighting in the thrust towards Leningrad. Then followed contact with the Soviets near Demjansk where Clause was awarded the EK2. Most of this time was spent by Clause and other Kameraden from his Totenkopf unit being used to plug holes and repel Soviet attacks around the area of Bjakowo. It was during these actions that Clause was awarded the EK1 for his brave efforts.

Not long after the award of the EK1 Clause was wounded in action at Demjansk and thus incapacitated and flown out of the pocket with a number of other wounded men of the SS-Totenkopf around the middle of 1942.

Clause rejoined his unit in time for the battle of Kharkov where he was placed in command of a small Kradshutzen unit. It was this period of the Divisions history that saw the loss of "Papa" Eicke. Clause went on to take part in operation Citadel where again he was in charge of a small Kradshustzen unit whos main task was to provide urgent support to front line units under pressure from Soviet counter attacks.

After various battles on the Mius front, Clause, with the rest of his Division began the hard retreat into Romania and was involved in heavy defensive fighting east of the Dnieper near Krivoi-Rog.

Sadly the war came to an end for Clause in Warsaw on the 12th February 1945. Whilst surrendering to front line soviet forces Clause along with hundreds of other brave men of the Totenkopf division were executed by soviet NKVD units looking for revenge.
